Orality and Literacy Within the Somali Diaspora.
- Abstract
Chapter 2 of the book "Language Learning: A Journal of Research in Language Studies" is presented. It provides an overview of research in the areas of orality and literacy among Somali adolescents and adults including some of the documented consequences of limited formal schooling in Minnesota. It relates the case of one Somali student who, according to the author, dispels the myth about being Somali that national and ethnic identities can be chosen and cultivated. It highlights the larger racial and ethnic picture of the state.
