- Abstract
This paper investigates the phenomenon of teachers’ demission in primary and secondary schools. Based on the life course theory, the characteristics of the life trajectory of 20 teachers who have left their jol)s are analyzed. The main types of the reasons for leaving their jobs are external-force type, internal-force type, external-force with internal-force type and internal-force with external-force type. There are two totally different types of life trajectories of demission teachers; “shocking type” and “steady type”. Among demission teachers, the life course of external-force type and external-force with internal-force type teachers is more turbulent and bumpy. It is quite common for these two types of teachers to abruptly end their teaching careers due to major setbacks; in comparison, the life course of the other two types of demission teachers is relatively stable, they have not experienced major ups and downs, rarely suffered heavy and lasting blows from external events, and the end of their teaching careers is mainly due to personal matters or wills. Most of the demission teachers have exerted their own subjective initiative, their life trajectories have shown an upward trend after demission, and the difficult situation of their teaching careers has passed; only the life trajectories of the demission teachers belonging to external-force with internal-force type show a downward trend after demission, the hard situation of their teaching careers has not lieen improved, or even worsened. The relationship between life events and teachers’ demission is mainly manifested as follows; “happiness” followed by “troubles”, never-ending “troubles”, hand-in-hand “events”, internal “troubles” and external“worries” , “troubles” out and “troubles” in.
