- Abstract
This research note focuses on social representations of solidarity based on recent research. The study attempts to identify the social circulation of the concept of solidarity by observing the discourses used to construct it, the practices these reflect, and the modes of social connection they promote. The note examines the varying contemporary representations of solidarity that appear in publicity generated by the Chilean government, businesses, and social organizations. In calls for citizens to exercise solidarity, differences among the discourses tend to diminish, while neoliberal values take priority. The note concludes that a neoliberalization of solidarity can be observed. The average citizen does not perceive this neoliberal substratum, focusing mainly on the theme presented, only rarely on the manner of presentation, and almost never on the statement's social effects.
