Title
Eradicating the Screwworm Fly.
Abstract
The article presents a history of the eradication of the New World myiasis-causing parasitic screwworm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), which became a problem of the livestock industries in North and South America for 150 years. The flesh-eating larvae of the fly caused millions of dollars in industry losses annually. Also cited is how entomologist Edward F. Knipling sterilized the insects to prevent their reproduction that led to their ultimate eradication.
