- Abstract
The article focuses on the recent developments in pension and retirement plans in the U.S. It examines some of the reasons for these developments and aims to assess their significance for the U.S. economy. It discusses several factors influencing pension plans including sociological, legal and economic factors such as the changing age structure of the population, urbanization and industrialization which have changed the pattern of living of the aged. It mentions the Old Age, Survivors and Disability Insurance program established by the U.S. Social Security Act. Similarly maintained by the federal government are pension funds meant for railroad workers and for its ows civil service employees.
