- Abstract
Titanium implants with the following sizes: 4.5mm (2 rabbits) and 2.5 mm (2 rabbits) diameter were inserted in the rabbit femoral diaphysis. After 2 months, the rabbits were sacrificed and the bone fraction containing the implant was processed for histopathological examination. We observed that the boneimplant interface was covered with newly formed bone on approximately 75% in the case of the 4.5 mm diameter implant and approximately 90% in the 2.5 mm one. The remaniation process towards adult lamellar bone was in incipient stage in the case of the 4.5 diameter implant and obviously more advanced in the 2.5 mm one, although not finished yet. The study highlights that the osseointegration process takes place faster, the smaller the diameter of the implant is.
