Abstract

The production of railway equipment in Mexico took a leap in the 1950s, driven by public companies that promoted a diversification and local productive integration. During its evolution, it was possible to create an industrial complex dedicated to transport that maintained linkages with a vast network of suppliers of different sizes in several industrial branches. This article analyzes the impact of privatization and the economic opening of the nineties on this network, particularly in small and medium enterprises (SMEs), to know if the arrival of transnational firms affected or stimulated the network of local suppliers. To this end, the evolution of the productive structure is studied, before and after the signing of NAFTA (1992), and the types of links established by the large company (public or private) with local productive actors are analyzed.
