- Abstract
The article examines the U.S. system for legal oversight of nonprofits, which divides responsibility between the state governments and the federal government. Topics discussed include the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) role in overseeing tax-exempt organizations; framework for federally tax-exempt organizations; and need of consolidate information gathering at the IRS through a national funding mechanism.
