- Abstract
This article, titled "Response to Comment from Mr. Guy Swenson," addresses the importance of considering groundwater flow in remedial evaluation discussions for in-situ remedial treatment. The authors agree with Mr. Swenson's comment that groundwater flow is often overlooked but emphasize its critical role in designing the size of injections and selecting a remedial substrate. They explain that while groundwater flow is not specifically addressed in some examples, long-term monitoring usually accounts for the total volume of injected solution. The article also discusses the flushing of material from injection areas and the potential for contaminant rebound at different remediation sites. Overall, the authors suggest that factors such as biomass recycling and formation of reactive mineral species should be maximized to support optimized treatment performance and planning for eventual transition to passive remediation phases.
