- Abstract
Titanium implants with the length of 5 mm and the diameter of 2 mm were inserted in the femora of 10 male rabbits aged 11 months. The implants penetrated the medullar cavity with more than half their length. Four weeks later, the histologic exam revealed that the newly proliferated bone covers the implant on its whole length, both on its inter-bone area, and on its intra-medullar one, except a limited area from the unthreaded collar. From a quantitative point of view, we can say that the osteointegration situation is very good at only 4 weeks, the proliferated bone occupying the widest interface surface. From the mechanical resistance point of view, the situation is somehow different because the proliferated bone up to this part of the experiment is still new and it needs some more time to remold into a mature lamellar bone. The stage to which the proliferated peri-implant bone tissues reach within 4 weeks after their implantation in contact with the hematogenous marrow represents a great advantage that will lead to the shortening of the necessary period for implant osteointegration. This aspect is very important and it can represent a decisive argument especially for the immediate-load procedure.
