- Abstract
Mishkiniai, a small Jewish community, where the scene of Grigoriy Kanovich's trilogy "A Kid for Two Grosz" («ҜңзлеНоҍ за двг роша»), "Don't Avert Your Face from Death" («не отвŀаТИ ЛИца от смерТИ»), "Satan's Charm" («ОЧароваНъе сатаНъӀ») is laid, plays a very important role. This Jewish community links the trilogy to its exposition, novels "Candles in the Wind" («СВеЧИ На веТру») and "Tears and Prayers of Fools" («СЛезъӀ И МмолтвъӀ дураҍов»). The world of smell of the Jewish community is rich and multifaceted in Kanovich's prose. Various smells signify a specific place and, as the author draws the time line in his narration, historical events. Smell is also used to characterize the physical state and social status of the characters. Morai choices, psychological states, emotions, feelings, all have a characteristic smell. When the character's psychological state, mood or moral attitude changes other smells appear. Kanovich focuses on the fate of Litvaks, Lithuanian Jews, and smell also helps identify the characters' nationality, identity features, make a distinction between "own" and "another". Describing Mishkiniai dwellers the author shows how they see Jews, accept their smell, which is familiar and not foul. The world, people, location, time, all has a particular smell in Kanovich's books and should be interpreted from social and philosophical points of view.
