- Title
Red Trousers: Lady Chatterley's Lover and John Hargrave.
- Authors
Bradshaw, David
- Abstract
The article explores the relationship between novelist D.H. Lawrence's "Lady Chatterley's Lover" and John Gordon Hargrave, author and founder of the Kindred of the Kibbo Kift (KKK). The analysis shows Lawrence's enthusiasm with red or scarlet trousers in the novel. It argues that the scarlet pants of Mellors, the novel's protagonist, were directly inspired by the ideas of Hargrave. These trousers play a role in both KKK ceremonials and in Hargrave's book "The Confession of the Kibbo Kift." The article also shows the parallel between Hargrave's proposal for the redemption of the English worker and Mellors' own ridiculous scheme that it seems unlikely that there is no connection at all between them.
