- Abstract
This article examines the relationship of Ockeghem’s Missa De plus en plus to the Binchois chanson that provides its cantus firmus. On the general level, it suggests that Ockeghem had a problem with his model, that he disagreed with Binchois on a major compositional point, the ‘modal shift’ from g to d at the end of the chanson, and that he expressed his disagreement in his Mass through a technique of deliberate misappropriation and redirection similar to one of the strategies of overcoming the oppressive precursor proposed by Harold Bloom in his book The anxiety of influence. On the specific level, the article examines the tenor of the Gloria of the Mass as a reflection of Ockeghem’s awareness and acceptance of the easily comprehended and easily reproduced proportional structure of the chanson. The article also suggests that its analysis supports the contention that the Mass is one of Ockeghem’s early works.
