- Abstract
The risks of lightning strike take into account in the design of all vehicles on land, sea and especially air, in order to eliminate or to minimize the indirect effects of lightning on the electronic systems. In this study, the indirect effects of lightning strikes on the armed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which are widely used in military fields, have been examined. A typical armed UAV is modelled in threedimensions and numerically analysed with computer-based simulations. The return stroke currents generated by separately applying the lightning strike to the different lightning rods on the armed UAV were obtained. Lightning current paths that should have electrical continuity were determined by computing the electromagnetic (EM) field intensity and surface current distributions caused by the return stroke current. In addition, return stroke currents are compared for PEC, aluminium and carbon fiber reinforced composite coated armed UAVs.
