- Abstract
With revival of Olympics at the end of 19th century, the games have become one of the biggest sports events. The games have had a meaning beyond being a sports activity with the cities competing with each other ın order to gain a place in the global arena in the post 1980 period. The scale and significance of games pose both threats and opportunities for infrastructures of the host cities. Cities willing to host big organizations such as Olympics use them as an instrument for their urban transformations and economic developments and this whole process creates 'losers' and 'winners'. The study aims to analyze the relationship between the cities and the Olympics on the basis of threats and opportunities. After a brief history of the Olympics, the effects of the Olympics on the host cities are studied in terms of spatial, economic and social dimension within the framework of globalization policies.
