- Abstract
An engineer-scaled experiment, KENTEX is being performed at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute to study the thermal, hydraulic, and mechanical (THM) processes occurring in the engineered barrier system of a high-level radioactive waste repository. The water and temperature distributions in the bentonite buffer of KENTEX due to the intrusion of groundwater were analyzed with the TOUGH2 computer program. The detailed geometry of KENTEX and the hydraulic and thermal properties of the bentonite buffer were incorporated into the model. Calculated results were compared to experiment valves. Both agree well, which indicates that the thermal and hydraulic coupled process in KENTEX can be simulated with the TOUGH2 program.
