- Abstract
The studies on the environment are eventually considered crucial and thus widespread. Today, the environmental concerns are regarded as the gigantic problems threatening the very existence of the humanity. The progress achieved so far is nothing but attributed to the relations between environment and society. The problem is handled in its diverse revelations together with equivalent number of solutions. The religions representing the culture inherited from the history of humanity has played crucial role in establishing the modes of relations between the environment and society. In fact, it can be argued the philosophical basis of the relationship between the man and its environment is shaped by means of the religion. The religions prevailing in today's world like Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam are still determinant of the majority of world population. Therefore, it is crucial to know how far the relations between the environment and society are shaped by the religions. In historical point of view of the system of values of the religion establishing the relations between the environment and society, we see that the interpretations range between environmental-centered approaches to the human-centered approaches. Finally, there are attempts to locate the Islamic approach at the center of these two extreme approaches in effort to reach a compromise.
