- Abstract
The allelopathic effects of leaf litter leachates (5,10,20, 50,75 and 100% concentrations) of mangrove Excoecaria agallocha L. were evaluated on seed germination and seedling growth of 3-rice cultivars (Jaya, Ratna 4 and Ratna 24). The leaf litter leachate at 75% and 100% concentration caused highest inhibition in seed germination, shoot length, seedling dry matter and vigour index. The magnitude of inhibition at higher concentration followed the order: Ratna-4 > Ratna-24 > Jaya. Germination and seedling growth was significantly reduced The increase in leaf litter leachate concentration, decreased the chlorophyll content, soluble sugar content and soluble protein contents in all rice varieties over control. The GC MS analysis of leachate revealed the presence of some fatty acid derivatives having allelopathic potential.
