- Title
Excited Delirium: What's Psychiatry Got to do With It?
- Authors
Lieberman, Paul B.
- Abstract
The article discusses the concept of excited delirium, a medical syndrome characterized by a decline in cognition and attention. The diagnosis of excited delirium is controversial and lacks empirical validation. The article argues that psychiatrists should be involved in the discussion surrounding excited delirium, as misdiagnoses can occur and patients may have other psychiatric conditions. The article also highlights the importance of psychiatric knowledge in understanding the interactions between individuals with and without diagnosable mental disorders. The potential risks and benefits of psychiatry's engagement in broader social and political issues are also discussed.
