- Abstract
Despite advances in our understanding of mental illness over the past few decades, the stigma attached to mental health problems persists. It continues to pose a serious threat to the well-being of mentally ill individuals through its exacerbation of symptoms and its impedance upon the treatment and recovery process. Although this stigma and its myriad subcomponents have been dissected by many theorists, the current paper adopts an integrative, macro level, multidisciplinary approach to elucidate four fundamental reasons for why the stigma surrounding mental illness has remained a severe, pervasive part of the human condition. Collectively, these reasons reveal that not only is mental illness stigma of a deep-seated, enduring nature, it is also one that takes several forms and operates at different layers. Furthermore, it is intrinsically linked to our evolutionary history and is rooted in existential crises.
