- Authors
FRANK, GILLIAN
- Abstract
The article focuses on the conservative opposition to gay rights in Florida in the 1970s and how antigay activist Anita Bryant founded the organization Save Our Children (SOC) which sought to prevent homosexuality in children. The author compares gay rights and sexuality to civil rights and race, and explores the idea of interracial sexual relations as something feared by conservatives. She discusses the success of SOC in Dade County, Florida, explores how parents' rights were impacted by anti-discrimination legislation, and analyzes the religious aspects of social conservatism.
