- Abstract
The article discusses efforts by King Leopold III of Belgium and U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) to remove the remains of Belgian missionary Father Joseph Damien De Veuster from the Hawaiian island of Molokai to his native country. Particular focus is given to letters exchanged between Leopold and FDR concerning the logistics of the removal and of related ceremonies honoring De Veuster. Details related to Hawaiians' attitudes towards De Veuster, his work with leprosy patients, and his later canonization as a saint by the Roman Catholic church are also presented.
