- Abstract
This article compares Orthodox Judaism in Israel and in the American Diaspora. The author claims that the differences between Israel and the Western Jewish Diaspora are related to the criteria used to determine affiliation with "Orthodoxy," or the "religious camp." One can differentiate between several conceptions of Diaspora within contemporary Orthodoxy. In the traditional conception, there is no place for the concept of "Diaspora." Instead, there is the concept of Galut (exile), which has a geographical meaning--living outside the Land of Israel, as well as an existential meaning--a situation of estrangement, oppression, and persecution.
