- Abstract
The article presents a transcript of a hearing between farmer Joseph Roberts Smallwood, a group of lawyers, and the St. John's Housing Corporation regarding the corporation's appropriation and valuation of Smallwood's land in 1945. The author first explains how the corporation was authorized to expropriate land by the Newfoundland and Labrador government for the beautification of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Also addressed are Smallwood's pig farming, his later involvement in Newfoundland politics, and his support for Newfoundland's union with Canada.
