- Abstract
This article analyzes the role of honor in the consciousness of Ottoman Jews, reconstruct what it meant to different strata of Ottoman Jewish society, and clarify its role as a component in the shaping of their mentality. The article also study the cultural context of the Jewish-Iberian heritage and the circumstances of life in an Ottoman urban environment. Honor is culture-dependent. It is interpreted differently and has different components in every culture, being one expression of its value system. Ottoman-Jewish culture included a Jewish component, mainly of Iberian provenance, and an Ottoman urban component. One may discern three contemporaneous cultural systems: of the rabbinic elite; of the Jewish lay or popular culture; and of the Muslim-Ottoman system.
