- Title
The Maturing of Commentary and of the Jewish Intellectual.
- Authors
Wise, Ruth R.
- Abstract
The article focuses on editor-in-chief Norman Podhoretz and his contribution in culture promotion under Jewish auspices in the magazine "Commentary". The American Jewish Committee used the young and took Podhoretz to promote a culture that did not have the perpetuation of Jewishness or of the Jewish people as its stated goal. The magazine views that an intellectual had to take responsibility for the consequences of his words. It was proud of its scholarly literacy, included respect for the country's political institutions and concern for the Jews and flattered its readers with confidence in their intelligence and civility. It promoted the shaping of a bold new image of the Jewish intellectual as a contributor in the national debate.
