- Abstract
This article studies the afromestizo population in the towns of Amatitlán and San Gerónimo, Guatemala, using 19th century maps. The author describes the characteristics of each town during this time period, including their use of communal agricultural lands known as ejidos. The introduction of African slaves to work on sugar plantations and the subsequent growth of the afromestizo population in the region is considered. The effects of liberalism in the 19th century on the afromestizo population is also examined.
