Family Trees in the Thebaid: The Missing Links.
- Authors
Conrau-Lewis, Kyle
- Abstract
The article analyzes the epic poem the "Thebaid" by Publius Papinius Statius. Particular focus is given to the role of genealogy in the poem as related to the characterisation of the hero figures Adrastus, Polynices, Tydeus, Amphiaraus, Parthenopaeus, Hippomedon, and Capaneus. According to the author, Statius' depictions of genealogy are not as uniformly negative as some scholars have suggested. Other topics include gender, patronymics, and shame.
