- Abstract
Since the biggest drop in enrollment occurs during the freshman year, most institutions find it essential to focus retention efforts on first year students [Boyer, 1997]. Using a framework aimed to improve retention rates for first year business students [Cox, Schmitt, Bobrowski and Graham, 2005], two universities, with different student population and restraints, developed first year courses for entering business students with primary goals of retention and engaged learning. Though the details of the two programs are quite different, both have followed the essential elements of the retention model. This paper intends to enhance the discussion of ways business schools can design and implement successful first year courses that support, rather than conflict with, their larger academic institutions.
