- Abstract
The article discusses the history of the so-called anti-popes during the high Middle Ages, focusing in particular on how the medieval Catholic Church sought to purge these schismatics from its institutional and collective memory. It considers the ancient Roman legal concept of damnatio memoriae as a possible avenue to understand the mechanisms of remembering and forgetting. It also addresses the implications of these considerations for the historiography of the medieval papacy and the use of papal documents as historical sources. These questions are discussed with reference to the Alexandrine Schism between 1159 and 1177.
