Phili, Christine
- Abstract
The article discusses the lives and careers of Greek clerics and scientists Benjamin of Lesbos and Theophilus Kairis, who had an active role in the Greek Revolution of Independence from the Ottoman Empire. The author focuses on the similarities of their scientific and political trajectories, which ended on their accusation of atheism by the Catholic Church and, in the case of Kairis, a death sentence. Theophilus Kairis, who was a student of Benjamin of Lesbos, is considered the father of modern education in Greece.
