- Abstract
Since the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first birth control pill 60 years ago, remarkable progress has enabled women to access modern methods of contraception with greater choice, convenience, and control over their reproductive lives. We estimate that 170 million women worldwide - one in five using modern methods of contraception - are using a method of contraception developed by, or based on, Population Council technologies. The United Nations estimates that of the 1.9 billion women of reproductive age (15-49 years) in 2019, about 42% have no need for contraception, and the remaining 58% (1.1 billion) have a need.1 Of these 1.1 billion, 842 million use modern methods of contraception, and 80 million use traditional methods.
