- Abstract
Social scientists have investigated school boards, superintendents, principals, teachers, students, and guidance counselors, but apparently middle‐class bias causes them to neglect the study of people such as custodians. In‐depth interviews were conducted with 25 custodians, and briefer discussions were held with the head custodian and union officials. The head custodian receives a salary of $17,000 per year, and some custodians receive a larger annual salary from the school system than many teachers. School custodians are responsible for the safety of hundreds of people. Many have licenses as first‐class firemen, low‐pressure boiler operators, and oilers. Their work involves maintenance and operation of hand‐ and oil‐fired heating systems and daily testing of safety valves. The custodian can deal with his status dilemma through horizontal mobility on the job or union activity off the job.
