- Abstract
The article focuses on the interrelationships among various language proficiency tests in the teaching of English as a Second Language (ESL) including American University of Beirut (AUB) English test, Cloze test and Writing test. These three English language proficiency tests were given to the students who were applying for admission to AUB. Pairwise correlations of the scores of the three tests were all high and the predictability of communicative language proficiency was improved by the combination of the scores of Cloze test and AUB English test. The article states that a cloze component can serve as a valuable supplement for standardized ESL tests.
