- Title
The Use of Case Grammar in Teaching English as a Foreign Language.
- Authors
Nilsen, Don L. F.
- Abstract
The article discusses the use of case grammar in the teaching of English as a foreign language. The author discusses the idea of Charles Fillmore that the universal base component in linguistics consists of semantic 'cases', rather than some other unit (such as semantic 'features', phonological units or syntactic structures). The analogy of a dramatic play is employed to illustrate this concept. Types of verb cases and their use are discussed. Relevance for techniques of teaching English as a foreign language are set forth.
