- Abstract
Most women in the United States become mothers at some point in their lives, but there is a small group of women who choose to remain childfree. The purpose of this study was to compare selected differences in stereotype perception of childfree status, dyadic relationship satisfaction, and life satisfaction, between self-identified heterosexual, bisexual and lesbian women who choose to remain childfree. Data were collected via an online questionnaire and one-way ANOVAs and chi square tests were used to differentiate sexual orientation and those selected factors. The questionnaire was completed by a nonrandom, convenience sample of 468 childfree women and significant differences were found between groups among all selected factors. All groups reported more perceived stereotyping regarding their childfree lifestyle from relatives as opposed to friends. Heterosexual women were more satisfied in their relationships when compared to both the bisexual and lesbian women and lesbian women reported the highest level of life satisfaction among the three groups.
