- Title
The Valaam Myth and the Fate of Leningrad's Disabled Veterans.
- Authors
DALE, ROBERT
- Abstract
The article presents an examination into the historical veracity and oral history development of what the author calls "the Valaam myth," which describes the rounding up and exile of disabled Soviet World War II veterans from the city of Leningrad to the island of Valaam in the late 1940s under Joseph Stalin's regime. The various forms and possible origins of this urban tale are described, noting a lack of historical evidence proving its truthfulness despite its popular acceptance. The author then points out archival evidence which does support its historical claim, but also refutes certain details common to several versions of the myth.
