- Title
The Usefulness of Chronological Arrangement for Subheadings in Book Indexes: An Examination of the Literature (Part Two).
- Authors
Marshall, Linnea
- Abstract
The article focuses on the usefulness of a chronological arrangement for subheadings in book indexes. It states that alphabetical order for subheadings in back-of-book indexes is beneficial because it can easily be understood by readers. The practice is well-established but indexers and editors may take it for granted and disregard the idea that it is useful for readers if the subheadings are chronologically arranged. The chronological arrangement of subheadings lessens the subjectivity in the selection of index terms, offers the reader a quick reference guide and summary of a certain topic and helps in making subheadings easier to read through its narrative flow.
