- Title
The Indexer as Consultant: Collaborative Indexing of Community Newspapers.
- Authors
Weaver, Carolyn G.
- Abstract
This article presents a female indexer and information scientist's insights into professional indexing practice in the U.S. She acted as consultant in an indexing project involving community newspapers in Vashon Island, Washington State. Considerations and issues she outlined include the progress of the newspapers over time in terms of size, format, and density of indexable material, vocabulary control, database-related challenges, and the necessity of defining indexability of items. She recommended the use of dedicated indexing software for data entry and a search for existing subject heading lists that may be adapted for local use.
