A Reply to My Critics.
- Authors
WARREN, KENNETH W.
- Abstract
The author presents his response to reviews of his book "What Was African American Literature?" He divulges that the book was written in an attenpt to clarify the term "African American literature," which scholars have produced a range of incompatible ways of defining it. He believes that African American literature became a distinct genre because of the exclusion of African Americans from politics in the U.S. South. The genre is also a political tool to struggle against racial discrimination.
