- Abstract
Globalization in the 1990s and 2000s made the world grow closer together, increased international trade, and led to a large number of international agreements on a wide range of issues. Japan was one of the main benefactors of this liberal international order. However, recent events like the Russian invasion of Ukraine or the US-China chip war made apparent what had been looming for some time, namely that the geo-political system is splitting apart. This article highlights Japan’s response to these geostrategic changes and asks if recent shifts in its national security- and technology policies are sufficient and can be implemented quickly enough, given its continued reliance on the United States and China.
