- Abstract
In Italy, in the past few decades, several small towns and villages in inland areas have been affected by constant depopulation or have been completely abandoned for various reasons. Sometimes, this has been due to landslides. This paper focuses on a case study of Craco, a village in the Basilicata region of considerable historic and architectural interest, which was relocated following landslides that occurred between 1959 and 1972. The main purpose of this study is to propose a method that considers the monitoring of landslides (surface and deep) and consequently, to suggest interventions for reuse of areas affected, based on the principles of integrated conservation and considering the "genius loci". The ultimate purpose is that this approach can be applied to other similar situations, and could be useful to local authorities or decision-makers involved in the process of sustainable regeneration, and development of territories undergoing depopulation.
