- Title
Prostate Cancer Screening; Is This a Teachable Moment?
- Authors
Brawley, Otis W.
- Abstract
The author comments on the lessons from a research which revealed that prostate cancer screening has resulted in substantial overdiagnosis and in unnecessary treatment. The author describes how a radio commercial urging men to get screened for prostate cancer appeals to the fears and prejudices of the listeners. He argues that the overdiagnosis of prostate cancer artificially prolongs survival statistics. The author emphasizes the need for scientific evidence and the rational use of medicine.
