The article addresses homelessness among persons with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI) in the U.S. Topics discussed include history of state hospital care, role of social security, and society's understanding of homelessness and mental illness. Also mentioned are lack of effective treatment, Social Security Insurance (SUSHI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SDI), and the challenge of housing.
