- Abstract
The article discusses how countries should take special measures to mitigate the effect of an influenza pandemic on existing social inequalities. According to the authors, the potential for a pandemic to aggravate existing social and economic inequalities underscores the value of considering a pandemic not only as a pressing public health issue, but also as an urgent matter of social justice. Social justice is concerned with how features of the social structure end in systematic inequalities and disadvantages in well-being. The extent to which current national pandemic plans meet the criteria set forth in the Bellagio Group's checklist is also discussed.
