- Abstract
For the Church, culture is a vital and necessary reality. Here the concepts of word, fellowship, truth and love are crucial to form a paideia or ideal for full development of man in a Christian culture. The Christian paideia in Latin America led to a new synthesis that has marked the continent's identity. The Third General Conference of Latin American Bishops held in Puebla, called the essence as mestizo. Both this term and the term baroque are viewed with contempt in this society because of ideological currents that judge the phenomenon as a form of pollution by European peoples. There are also European readings which see the contact with Amerindian reality merely as an accidental episode. However, the baroque ethos is an uncontestable experience of mestizaje that represents no source of shame, but rather a title of honor precisely because it is a sign of the specific contribution of Latin America to the world.
