- Abstract
Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is characterized by neurological complications and vascular micro and macro affecting vital organs like the brain, heart and vascular system, kidney and retina, caused functional limitation and disability in people who suffer from manifestations. The progressive deterioration in vision and blindness often occur in diabetics; while neuropathy and alterations in the peripheral circulation, directly related chronic hyperglycemic states, are predisposing risk factors for developing ulcers later amputation and in some cases even death. However it has not been related deterioration in visual function with injuries in the feet of diabetic people despite the high frequency of these comorbidities in the diabetic population. Methods: Cross sectional study in patients attending the consultation of diabetic foot in two consecutive years. The patient information came from secondary sources (medical records). In addition to the description of the variables of interest, statistical differences between the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics about having or not diabetic retinopathy were sought, statistical differences with p<0,05 were considered. Results: 61 patients population, 55.7 % female with an average age of 61 years. Diabetic retinopathy 52.5 % and 27.9 % other than visual disturbances to retinopathy (8.2 % refractive error, glaucoma 6.6%, 3.3% and cataract). 93.4 % of patients had diabetic neuropathy, 54.1 % ulceration in at least one end and 24.6 % had amputation. When comparing patients with and without retinopathy greater proportion of patients with ulceration (p = 0.016), peripheral neuropathy (p = 0.012) and a higher average number of years with a diagnosis of diabetes (p = 0.033) was found in patients with diabetic retinopathy. Conclusions: eye diseases are high frequency in consultation Diabetic foot being the most prevalent diabetic retinopathy.
