- Abstract
The goal of this paper is to present, using first hand linguistic data, the Xavante color system. The Xavante are an indigenous group from the Ge central family that inhabits the Brazilian State of Mato Grosso. Such linguistic description is mainly informed by the relations that the color lexicon maintains with Xavante cosmology, as well as current changes triggered by the contact with other systems of chromatic designation. The Xavante color terms are worthy of studying because they do not fit the semantic-perceptual universal principles of color cognition and, by the same token, for expressing values and relationships also found in their social organization, aesthetics and notions of human agency and body.
