Progress Through Innovation.

- Abstract
The article focuses on the role of original thoughts to drive innovation in arbitral forums. British Historian C. Northcote Parkinson noted the fact that complacency is curse to progress and reflected it in Parkinson's law. According to Parkinson, successful bureaucrats are driven by two guiding forces: to multiply subordinates and not rivals, and to make work for each other. The recognition that innovation fuels positive movement was also identified by the ancient Greeks. The Greek competitive spirit has been singled out by Swiss Historian Jakob Burckhardt as the key to their national characters. The ancient Greek passion for innovation resonates in the American Arbitration Association's efforts to advance Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) through technology. On a more philosophical level, the Greek focus on the central role and value of humanity also speaks to the ethical obligations and the effort to restore balance and order that lies at the heart of ADR processes.
