- Abstract
The article discusses the changing political landscape in Southeast Asia, with a particular focus on challenges presented by increasing regionalism and globalization amid traditions of political diversity. It looks at four challenges faced by Myanmar which include dual transitions, establishing civilian control over the military, and the need to broaden and balance foreign relations. The author describes Philippine democracy as maturing towards a performance legitimacy. Details on Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra are presented. According to the author, the most stable political systems in Southeast Asia are in the Philippines, Indonesia and Singapore.
